Specyal T – Foresight (Album Review)

While Specyal T proves that she can pack a punch in the production department, she unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired in terms of vocality and song variation.

Being a Caribbean Canadian, Specyal T is obviously influenced by the inherent musical culture that lies within her roots. Foresight takes a tropical influence from genres like dancehall and Afrobeats to create a distinctly Caribbean-infused sound that feels undeniably Toronto.

“Double Take” and “Lowkey” both have great up-tempo beats that instantly bring thoughts of palm trees and beach sands. I feel like instrumentals like these could’ve shone more if the vocal performance was a little more subtle and the beats themselves had room to breathe; both songs could’ve been chill-out anthems.

“All Day” is a slowed-down, R&B-style track that sees Specyal T attempt a more seductive style attuned to the mellow sound of the instrumental. The simple, video-gamey sound of the beat feels especially Pierre Bourne-inspired; it’s catchy and purposely made to be an earworm.

“Nite Vision’s” beat feels like a soft tribute to the 2000s style of artists like Ginuwine and Bobby Valentino, with Specyal T taking a similar approach in her breathy, multi-layered tone.

Songs like these prove that the album has good production in spades; however, the main issues of the project lie within Specyal T’s vocals themselves.

Throughout the project, she fails to differentiate her tones and styles to give each song its own identity, and unfortunately, they all end up sounding pretty similar to each other.

That wouldn’t be too bad if her style was something that suited the production; however, her overly breathy tone and absurdly husky delivery just don’t suit her lighter, more tropical production choices.

Her hooks are decently structured but are ultimately let down by her unvaried vocal performance. I think on a future project, it would be good to see more range from Specyal T, something that she demonstrated more of on her last project “A Specyal Remedy”.
