Sometimes, ambient music gives us the necessary pause we need from the conscious decision to put ourselves into boxes, with mirrors reflecting the boxes. What do I mean by that? The box is the format of music we think is ‘acceptable’ to the masses, with the mirror simply being a metaphor for our need for curated images, personas and the way we present artists to the world.

Ambient artists take a very bold step against that, even if the use of the word ‘bold’ may seem contradictory to others due to the usual ‘spaced-out’ and airy approach the genre tends to employ, by creating a soundscape that can truly free your mind. Sometimes it’s through the use of heavenly pads, sometimes it’s truly the use of manipulating order and position within the arrangement of songs- either way, the end goal is for you to feel and think.

Meet today’s artist, this review will dissect, named FK. FK tends to oscillate between the waves of ambient as well as beat-oriented music, sometimes at the same time. This synergy, I’m sure, can lead to the strangest of coincidences and the best of ideas. They also engage in pop music production as well as contribute to some very strange bands. In today’s new release, titled ‘Silence (3)’, it presents itself as an ambient rework of the original track titled ‘Silence’ by FK, with 3 million streams to its name, primarily through Apple Music to its name. This is described as ‘one of the quiet moments’.

Honestly, in its subtlety, this track is really quite interesting to listen to. It has a lot of varying dynamics within its composition, with breaks and subdued peaks that act as an airy form of loose percussion, giving the track a good attempt at the interplay between silence and noise itself. It’s also very calming, with the use of ethereal pads in the background and simple arpeggiations to keep you hooked yet ascended, at the same time. The piano trills in the middle of the song give me the feel of a lot of anime-based theme songs or even breakcore interludes, with its melodic structure and tone.

All in all, I think this track is quite hard for anyone not to appreciate. It is a lost art, presenting itself with subtle beauty that reveals itself through every listen. It’s definitely beautiful, and can free your mind in the midst of the crazy stream of information that bombards us at every single moment.

SCORE/Excellent: ‘Silence (3)’ presents itself as an ambient, quieter rework of a track that bears its intent and delivers in its typically beautiful soundscape. Bearing the qualities of good mastering, enough variation and an ear for detail, there’s just simply no fault with this wonderful track.
